1 Computer Problem Set #1 Download TeachingRatings.xls from Blackboard (under Excel Data Sets folder). Right-click the file and save to the Desktop or the MyDocuments folder. Don’t open the file directly from Blackboard. #1A: Five-Number Summary of Course Evaluation Scores Open TeachingRatings.xls. Make sure you freeze the top row, if it isn’t frozen already (View- Freeze Panes- Freeze Top Row). Calculate the five-number summary for course_eval . Notice that the course_eval values are listed from cell f2 to cell f464. Enter the five calculations in cells f466-f470. The commands are: =min(f2:f464) then hit enter… =quartile(f2:f464, 1) =median(f2:f464) =quartile(f2:f464, 3) =max(f2:f464) We will enter those numbers onto our histogram in part #1B. #1B: Histogram of Course Evaluation Scores To create a histogram, you need to be able to use the Data Analysis command. Check to see if it is on your computer (click on Data and then Data Analysis should appear to the right). If the Data Analysis command doesn’t appear, you will need to load the Analysis ToolPak. Click on the question mark in upper-right-hand corner of your Excel screen, search for “Load the Analysis ToolPak,” and then follow those instructions. First, we need to create the classes (Excel calls bins) for our histogram. Let’s have our bins go 2.1, 2.2, 2.3…, 4.9, 5.0, 5.1. Enter 2.1 in cell j2. In cell j3, enter= j2 + 0.1 and then hit Enter. Copy cell j3 and paste it down the column until you’ve created all the bins through 5.1. Click on Data- Data Analysis- Histogram and then hit OK. In Input Range, enter f2:f464 in the white space. In Bin Range, enter j2:j32 in the white space (or you could just highlight all the bins). Click on Output Range. In the white space, enter L2 or some cell to the right of our data (that’s where the output will appear). Click on Chart Output (so the output will appear). Hit OK.

2 Eliminate the More category. Click on the histogram. Then drag the lower-right blue box (at the bottom of the Frequency column) up one line. Drag from the corner of the box when the diagonal line appears. Now the More category won’t appear in your histogram. Now let’s move the histogram so that it is located in a new sheet. Click on the histogram. Now select Design- Move Chart (located to right)- New Sheet. Delete the legend by simply clicking on it and hitting Delete. Now let’s eliminate the spaces between the bars in the histogram. Right-click on a bar, select Format Data Series, and choose No Gap. Click on the Chart Title and enter “Histogram of Course Evaluation Scores- Your Name.” Make sure you enter your name in the title. Click on the Horizontal Axis Title and enter “Course Evaluation Scores.” Keep “Frequency” as the Vertical Axis Title.
