Separatism and Integrationism -2 competing ideals in the black community starting at the turn of the 20 th century -Separatism- blacks turn inward to achieve equality and justice -Integrationism- cooperate with government to achieve equality & justice -not unique to black culture -Jews- Zionism vs. Assimilationism -Women- Liberationism vs. Integrationism II. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois -Booker T. Washington -Spearheads the Separatist Movement -Tuskegee Institute -offers training for Blacks in agricultural and industrial arts -willing to accept 2 nd class citizenship -does not question white supremacy -dubbed the “black leader of choice” by the white population -1895- “Separate as Fingers” Speech -“it is at the bottom that blacks must start, not the top” -warns the South that they do not want immigrants doing the work -advises blacks not to push for political power, but recognizes the importance of economic power -W.E.B. Dubois -against the policies of Booker T. Washington -p957- attack on Booker T. Washington -p958-“there is among educated and thoughtful…” -p959- “…adjustment and submission…” -p960-1- “political power…civil rights…” -blacks will only become free through the work of their most talented elite -The “Talented Tenth” -“the negro race is going to be saved by its exceptional men…” -p965- “the best and most capable of their youth…” -p967- “…industrialism drunk with its vision of success…” -does not appeal to the broad-base of blacks in America -overtly educationally elitist -formation of the NAACP
