Running head: MEDICAL PATERNALISM 1Goldman’s Account: A Strong Case For and Against Medical Paternalism Sarah Melvin University of North Carolina Wilmington PAR 215 Bioethics November 2, 2018
MEDICAL PATERNALISM 2Goldman’s Account: A Strong Case For and Against Medical Paternalism Goldman presents various statements throughout his article that suggest that he is against medical paternalism and that patient autonomy as well as self determination are more important. Unlike medical paternalism, patient autonomy deals with giving the patient the right to make choices about their lives and medical care even if it has the potential to cause harm. According to Goldman, we cannot simply “override a persons autonomy when in our opinion the potential harm to him from allowing autonomous decision outweighs the value of his freedom” (Goldman, pg. 62). This statement goes against medical paternalism and suggests that even if informed care can cause harm, a person has the right to know about their condition to respect patient autonomy.
