world’,  Nature , 435:1179-1186 o rate. o Environmental problems are growing, too. Some major issues include: Aire pollution Biodiversity loss Loss of agricultural land Depleted ‘renewable’ resources, such as fisheries Land degradation - e.g. desertification, overgrazing, soil  Water pollution o health hazards. o Although China’s per capita environmental impact is low in comparison to  MEDC’s, the total amount is devastating. The geography of China  varies from arid desert to tropics   environmental conditions  are highly variable both spatially and seasonally. China has 20% of the world’s population ; the majority of which live in the south and  east. The population growth is low, because of the One Child Policy   at 1% per year  (which is lower than the world average of 1.2%). However, average household size is decreasing due to socio-cultural and socio-economic  changed   this increases the environmental impact per person, as smaller households  consume more resources per person. Rural to urban migration continues   urban lifestyles are known to have greater  environmental impacts than rural livelihoods.   o China is the world’s largest user of fertiliser  leading to air, water and land  pollution.
