Journal Entry: China Human The onset of another Tibetan New Year has brought about yet another suicide by fire in protest of China’s strict and often times severe governmental policies in the areas of Tibet and Tibetan. The young monk who self-immolated was a mere 18 years old and members of China’s government accuse the Dali Lama of using young people to fuel and further his own political goals. The amount of self-immolation deaths in recent years is hard to estimate simply because both sides offer different interpretations and present different figures. There is a growing rift in Tibet about how to best combat and confront the Chinese government in hopes of achieving autonomy. As noted with the self- immolations, some individuals prefer graphic, yet peaceful protests, while others insist that violent actions needs to be taken. Regardless however, tensions between China and Tibet continue to mount and will esalate further if nothing is done in the near future.
