Unformatted text preview: 1. Gehry’s Guggenheim of Bilbao responds to its site by trying to adapt to its given space, yet still make something in contrast to it and against it. For example, the building does conform to the river by building along side it and it even gives the illusion of incorporating it into its overall structure. An artificial pond is created along side of it. It also seems to conform with the existing cityscape involving the bridge next to it in its plan and making sure it flows organically into the museum. But while it does offer these organic and fluid ways to incorporate the city, it also tries to define itself as a separate entity while do so. The building is made of very shiny titanium, which is intended to draw the eye to the building and separate instead of letting it blend in. It’s shape is also very random and confrontational, which again draws the eye and sharply contrasts with the rest of the city. But being as it is in a port site Gehry’s intention for it to resemble a ship should be noted. So its odd shape is not without reason.
