Topic Summary Resolved: The United States is justified in using private military firms abroad to pursue its military objectives. James Culver The Colorado College The words that are most important in the resolution seem to be justified, pursue and military objectives. By defining these words strategically, the affirmative is able to avoid many of the criticism’s that are likely to be presented by the negative debater. In this round, the debaters are simply trying to determine whether or not the use of military contractors is justified. Therefore, any value for the round that does not link to justice, is inherently avoiding the key component in the resolution. This reality is especially useful for affirmatives because it gives them the ability to quickly move through their opponents standards by arguing that they have tied their weighing mechanism to a value other than that of justice. Another important aspect of the word justified is that it can play a large role in the framework. Whoever the use of contractors has to be justified to, will play a large role in determining the winner of the round. For example, if the affirmative must show that the United States is justified in using contractors only if the local populous of a given country accepts their presence, than the burden of proof will be immensely more complicated than if the affirmative only had to show it was good from the United States standpoint. Focus some on how the word can be defined and you will be ahead of you opponent in many instances.
