The instructor’s observations at the UT Basketball game prompt much thought. Thompson-Boling arena is the second largest basketball arena in the nation. Thousands of fans enter the stadium at each event. Even more importantly, these fans generate garbage !! The assignment at hand questions how long it would actually take to fill up Thompson-Bowling arena with garbage. The first step of our estimation was to approximate the volume. In class, we came up with a volume of roughly 16,000,000 ft 3 , reasoning a radius of approximately 225 ft and a height of about 100 ft. Next, we calculated a fan base of about 15,000 fans per event at 40 events per year and an average “trash use” of about 1 ft 3 per person. These estimates give us a yearly trash consumption of 600,000 ft 3 / year, leading us to our final, in-class estimate of 27 years to fill the stadium.
