Georgia Space Bad Space Bad: Offense Animal Testing - Firstline ANIMAL TESTING IS NECESSARY FOR SPACE COLONIZATION Leath & Volosin ‘93 [Kevin, Sr. Engineer @ McDonnell Douglas NASA Langley, & Jeff, Engineering consultant @ Booz Allen and Hamilton, “Shaping Up for the Final Frontier,” Ad Astra, May/June, 35] The limited amount of data collected on anmials such as primates and rodents whos that these animals suffer many deconditioning effects similar to those observed in humans. The magnitude of the response bay differ, but the basic microgravity adaptations seem comparable. Consequently, animal “models” can in many cases be used as surrogate research subjects for developmental research. For example, microgravity experiments that support countermeasures development can use animal research to define gravity thresholds or the minimal gravity level required to create the desired gravity responses in critical physiological systems (eg, skeletal and muscular systems). This research should help answer questions on the utitlity of low levels of artificially produced gravity as a spaceflight countermeasure. It may also shed light on whether the partial gravity fields of the Moon and Mars could sustain normal gravitational responses . In addition to these scientific returns, the use of animals permits the use of a much smaller variable – gravity centrifuge to conduct the studies than would be required if humans were used as the research subjects . SPECIESISM THREATENS EXTINCTION Best 7 (Dr. Stephen, Professor of Humanities and Philosophy – University of Texas, Review of “The Eternal Treblinka: Our Treatment of Animals and the Holocaust”, Journal of Critical Animal Studies, 5(2), http://www.criticalanimalstudies.org/JCAS/Journal_Articles_download/Issue_7/bestpatterson.doc)

What students are saying

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
