Thurs. August 27, 2009 What is a human being? What is a self? What is a person? The Bororo people from central Brazil: hunters and gatherers that live in villages. Each village is divided in half, which are divided in half again, and again, etc. Village, Moites, Clan, Lineage… Lineage is a group that defines itself by one ancestral line. (either the mother or the father). Matrilineage or patrilineage defines who you are. Every bororo takes their name from the matri-clan. This is their social identity. All clans are exogamous—when married, you have to marry someone from outside of your own clan. All clans and lineages have “totems.” A totem is some sort of entity—plant, animal, mountain— that is intimately associated with the clan. When you consider a specific clan, the totem is especially important. Totems are regarded as spirits, and are not thought of as material. The Bororo regard spirits as immortal. After death, spirits join together. For the Bororo the essence of the spirit is more real than what we believe to be reality.
