Spring 2011 Syllabus MUS 121 – Music Appreciation Tuesday-Thursday 8:00am – 9:15am in CFA 110 Professor: Dr. Dmitri Atapine TA: Chris Clark Email: datapine@unr.edu citracious@gmail.com Office Hours: Tuesday 9:15am : SUBJECT TO CHANGE : EMAIL Course Description: Music Appreciation surveys the historic and cultural background of music in Western classical tradition. No pre-requisites are expected nor prior musical knowledge is needed to take this class. Music Appreciation fulfills the Fine Arts requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Nevada, Reno. Required Textbooks/Materials: Kerman, Joseph. Listen Boston, MA: Bedford/St. Martin’s. (includes text and 6 CD set. Both are required for the class) SCANTRONS for Quizzes and Final will be provided Assignment/Exams: 10 Mini Pop Quizzes 3 Full Quizzes 1 Concert Review. 1 Research Paper, four to five pages. Final Exam Late Assignments and Quizzes: I will NOT accept any late assignments, quizzes, or papers. Attendance/Participation/Mini Quizzes: 10 Pop Mini Quizzes will be given throughout the semester at any point during any lecture. Each one is worth 20 points for a total of 200 points. You CANNOT make up this quiz, so, come to class. This is the MAIN component of your attendance and participation. If you miss a Quiz due to a documented extenuating circumstance (health, natural disaster, family emergency, etc.), you will be given an opportunity to make it up with a short assignment. Contact me.
