Work: The physical and mental activities carried out at a place and time, according to instructions, while making a salary Salaries and gratifications are of two types: extrinsic (wages, bonuses, promotion) and intrinsic (status, recognition from peers) Affected by globalization, technological change and managerial strategies Work trends: People moved from agriculture to factories. The work became more rigorous and controlled by ‘scientific management’ principles Shift from the production of goods towards service, emotional work and knowledge-based industries An occupation can be crucial in shaping or reflecting the individual’s personal and social identity Taylorism: Workers motivated by money and were too stupid to develop an efficient way of performing a task The role of management was to ‘scientifically’ analyse tasks and design jobs to be efficient with minimal worker autonomy Fordism: Created the assembly line and the recording of job times Started the idea to use commodities to gain economies of scale Emotional work: When workers are required to show emotions (service with a smile) with the aim to cause customers to feel a particular way
