11.16.07 Field Notes: Powell third grade The phone rang while we were sitting on the rug in the morning. Teacher Sarah answered it “Third grade community”. Many children today didn’t have their homework signed by parents. Teacher Sarah asked why this was and a few children admitted that they go to sleep before their mother gets home and then wake up after their mother leaves in the morning. Teacher Sarah was forgiving and didn’t keep any of the kids in for recess (the usual consequence for incomplete homework). Many children have home environments in which it cannot be assumed that things such as note-signing can be easily done. Teacher Sarah and Teacher Joe know their students and try to address and work with their individual needs at school and at home. In math class (taught by Teacher Sarah) we all sat in a circle to count by twos. As we counted around, one girl, Christa incorrectly said ‘13’ instead of the correct ‘14’ and some students giggled. “That’s not helpful” reprimanded teacher Sarah. “This classroom is somewhere
