Class Notes 9/23/2010 OLD in Toddlers Toddler brain development 12-18 months Neural synapses increase, leading to a “language explosion” 18-24 months Brain is fully functional Language milestones 12-18 months Use primarily nouns Vocabulary of up to 50 words May use intonation to add meaning to rooms May not provide additional information without prompting May show frustration if not easily understood 24 months 2-3 word utterances Vocabulary up to 200 words 2-turn conversations Growth in understood receptive language Television and other programming to “teach” language actually are detrimental to  children’s OLD unless there is meaningful conversations with parents centered during
