Grammar: the system of rules and elements of phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics Syntax: how words are arranged within a sentence (“syntax” is of Greek origin meaning “a putting together” or “arrangement”) Syntax involves five main concepts: word order, phrase structure, constituency, parts of speech, and agreement What’s the difference between grammar and syntax?

What do rules pertain to? What must rules do? Rules pertaining to how sentences are formed, and these rules must account for all examples, so that all structures are well-formed (grammatically correct). An effective rule can generate an infinite number of phrases: generative grammar. Phrases can therefore be generated, not just described. Ex: prep phrase consists of prep + noun phrase Syntax is all about finding rules
