CHAPTER 3: FEDERALISM VOCABLARY FEDERALISM -Political system w/ multiple levels of government, each level independent authority over some important policy area CONFEDERATION -Political system w/ multiple levels of government, in which lower governments retain full sovereignty & cannot be compelled by national government to act DUAL CONFEDERATION -Political system in which each level of government (nation & state) are sovereign on its own sphere of political authority COOPERATIVE FEDERALISM -Political system in which both levels of government (national & state) are active in nearly all policy areas & shape sovereign authority -Both levels of government present in every piece INTERGOVERNMENTALISM -System which multiple levels of government are active in given policy area & cooperate & share resources -Problem: When both levels active in same area, then the boundaries are difficult to define INTERGOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS -Relationship b/w different levels of government -Ex.: Struggle b/w national government & states for authority over specific
