STUDY GUIDE EXAM 1 COMM 121 Key Terms Media – both entertainment and news (TV, Internet, Radio, Newspaper, Magazine, etc.); technology that provides information for people Communication Media – different technological processes that facilitate communication between the sender of a message and receiver of that message Social Construction of Reality – the process of actively creating meaning; there are different and similar interpretations of a certain media and finding the median Mass Media – media that reaches a relatively large audience of usually anonymous readers Reading – one’s own interpretation of the media presented Media User – people who use informational technology; audience or those who contribute to that particular type of media Narrowcasting – moving away from the mass broadcast audience and towards a smaller, more specialized population Socialization – process whereby we learn and internalize the values, benefits, and norms of our culture and, in doing so, develop a sense of self. Structure – social structure describes any recurring pattern of social behavior Agency – intentional and undetermined human action Structural constraint – rules and regulations of structure limit agency
