1 CWV - 101 December 05, 2019 Benchmark - Ethical Dilemmas Throughout everyone’s lives they face ethical dilemmas, some may be small, but others can have a larger impact that can challenge their morals, principles and worldview. When faced with an ethical dilemma, it makes you put your life in perspective. How you face these ethical dilemmas relies on your worldview, and while facing these challenges it impacts your worldview by changing it to more diverse. From a Christian worldview perspective, an ethical dilemma, like abortion will be examined and compared to how an atheist might approach it. Ethical Dilemma This case involves a woman, Susan, responding to her influential professor, Richard, who has expressed his feelings towards her dilemma. She is an anxious soon to be mom, who has been trying for many years to conceive. Susan is faced to make a decision for her first unborn child. Blood tests have come back stating her baby has Down syndrome, doctors have told her to abort the fetus. Richard has expressed his feelings by saying he believes she should also abort the fetus due to the suffering through the rest of both the babies and her lives. Richard believes the most ethical decision is preventing her baby from a life full of suffering. The dilemma is that she would be committing, in a way, genocide and murder of an innocent unborn baby, if she decides to follow the advice given. If she decides to go through and have the baby, she could find happiness in taking care of the baby. “Life has its ups and downs, but parenthood is supposed to be among the most joyous” (Does having a baby really make you happy?, 2015). But as the child grows it may or may not have a life of suffering, which could
2 cause Susan emotional suffering. To resolve the dilemma she could do one of the following: (a) abort the unborn baby and have no worry of a life of suffering, but carry the baron of knowing that she killed an innocent, or (b) have the baby and either keep it and take care of it with as much love, but have the worry of the child growing and suffering, or (c) give the baby up for adoption. Core Beliefs In the Bible, the sixth commandment states, “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13 NIV), which is one of the Christian worldview’s core beliefs. Since the baby is unborn and has no way to fend for itself, they are murdering an innocent child. Richard does state that this baby may have a life of suffering instead of happiness, but he does not know that for a fact. This child
