Monday, March 30Creation of political parties began during the American RevolutionFive Phases Phase 1. 1789-1793 - creation of the government and inauguration of George WashingtonCentral figure - Alexander Hamilton - secretary of treasury who also wanted to implement policies in general with the following ideologies of the Federalist Party1. Federalist - Strengthened the federal government2. Economics - Favored business and banking, big cities, and the north3. Construction - favored broad construction of the constitution, extremelyfederal4. Foreign Policy - wary of it, US should favor EnglandPhase 2. 1793-1801 - development of opposition by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison1. Foreign Policy - US should favor France2. Economics - should be local, not national. Favored the south, agriculture, and farmers3. Construction - strict constructionistsEmergency action group formed to mobilize the voters, called RepublicansGot Jefferson elected president which ends phase 2Phase 3.1801-1820 - the decline of political partiesFederalist party fades away and so does Republican for the following reasons1. They were never intended to be permanent - they were just revolutionary action groups2. Jefferson upheld some of Hamilton’s creations such as the national bank which blurred the lines between the two partiesWanted to gain new orleans for control of the Mississippi river -> led to the Louisiana purchase3. The mechanism for choosing the next president was no longer needed,there was always a president in waiting Impressment- British naval vessels would seize british colony ships and impress sailors into the British army, more than 6,000 american sailors were impressedJefferson passed an embargo which stopped American ships from sailing foreign seas at all -> american exports plummeted by 80% -> Madison becomes president in 1812 and begins war with Great BritainThe war is remembered for two reasons1. It is the last war between US and Britain2. Ended in 1815 really with the great military effort of Andrew Jackson and american troops in the Great Battle of New OrleansLed to a consensus that the US government should be involved in the development of the US economy Henry Clay in 1817 created the American System- three ideas about the US economics1. Continuation of the US bank2. Tariff in order to assist the US industry
