January 30 – February 3 WEEK #5 – Earth: A Dynamic System Lecture Objectives: Be able to distinguish between an isolated, closed, and open system. Be able to identify Earth’s systems and explain how they are connected by  cycles. Be able to explain the characteristics of a cycle (Steady-state) Be able to explain major processes involves in Earth’s major physical and  biochemical systems.  Be able to recognize and explain the importance of feedback mechanisms. Be able to identify sources and sinks within the Carbon Cycle. WILL BE  TESTED. I. Earth System Science What is a system? A collection of parts that interact with each other to function as a whole Parts can be isolated for study.

3 types of systems is olated system: laptop that is unplugged and has wifi turned off. closed system: laptop has no wifi but is plugged in to the wall. open system: laptop has wifi and is plugged in.  Earth is actually an  open  system; however, close is a good approximation for  most purposes.  Components of the Earth’s Systems ( BLAH ) Biosphere: all life on the planet Lithosphere: solid earth (includes liquid interior) and soil Atmosphere: the mixture of gases surrounding the Earth Hydrosphere: All water at/near the Earth’s surface (includes ice) II. The Earth System Life on Earth is due to interaction between the… LITHOSPHERE,  ATMOSPHERE, HYDROSPHERE.
