Be able to explain how bounding and atom packing influence a minerals  hardness. Be able to distinguish between crystal shape and crystalline structure.  I. What is matter? Matter: the substance of which any physical object is composed A. Defining matter: matter is anything that has mass and volume (takes up  space!) B. States of Matter: Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma  Examples: Gold (solid), Mercury (liquid), Oxygen (gas) In a solid, temperature of energy is low. In a liquid, particles can move around – liquid can take shape of container
