Jasmine Cho Nutrition Goals: list 6 classes of nutrients, identify the commended ranges for carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, state the daily recommended intake of fiber, identify daily fluid requirements, and list the components of a healthy diet. Diet: the foods and beverages you consume. Nutrient: any substance in food which can be used for energy, building tissue or regulating functions Essential: substances you must obtain from your diet macronutrients: nutrients required in large amounts (protein, carbohydrate, lipids) Micronutrients: nutrients required in small amounts (vitamins and minterals) Dietary Guidelines for Americans o Published every 5 years with goals to promote health and prevent major chronic disease o Top causes of death and disease are related to poor diet, physical inactivity, and energy imbalance (taking in more calories than are burned. o Science-based advice for those > 2 years o Take home message-eat fewer calories, be more active, make wiser food choices o Consume wide variety of nutrient dense food – whole grains, frutis, vegetables, legumes, lean protein o Limit intake of saturated and trans fat, cholesterol, salt, sugar, and alcohol o Balance calories from food and beverages with calories expended by following eating patterns: Food Guide Pyramid Distinguishing between whole grains, refined, processed foods, separting red meet from protein sources, and emphasizing healthy fats. DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) Men should limit to two drinks, women should limit to one drink 12 oz regular beer, 5 ounces of wine (12 percent alcohol, or 1.5 ounces of 80 proof distilled spirits. o Adopt regular physical activity Mypyramid.gov The healthy eating pyramid recognized the value of a daily multivitamin to make up for dietary shortcomings and a daily calcium supplement, a nutrient most Americans are lacking due to cultural food preferences, poor food choices, or lactose intolerance Only 3% of US population meets four of the five recommendations for the intake of fruits, vegetables, grains, milk products, meat and bean food groups ¼ of adult Americans and a 1/5 of all children consume te recommended serving of fruits and vegetables.
