WMST 101 Professor Berger Recap from Women and Creativity ‘Room of one’s own’ and ‘our mother’s gardens’ are metaphors for 20 th women’s creativity Definition of creativity has consequences for evaluating women’s creative expressions Girls Rock, NC – NC exemplifies 3 rd wave empowerment strategies for girls “We’ve Come a Long Way?” Prior to 1978, no woman whose career was not linked to the death of her spouse ever served in the US Senate. o Women face skepticism in politics- they couldn’t govern effectively. o The public didn’t believe that women could be strong candidates that can govern well o Questions such as “How does your husband feel about your running?” “Who is taking care of your children?” 87 women serve in the US Congress in total 16 women serve in the Senate (16%) and 71 women serve in the house (435 members, 16.3%) There are a high number of highly visible women leaders and candidates The issue nowadays is not skepticism. Their “ability” is not questioned. o If this is the way it is, why aren’t more women running for office?
