Ionization energy is the energy required to remove an electron from a neutral atom(have a charge of 0) The way it’s measured is considered the for atom to give up its electron. It is more difficult to remove an electron of a negatively charged particle, as well as any electrons too near the nucleus.

The Ionization Energy(IE) increases from bottom to top and left to right in the periodic table. IE and atomic size increase in different directions. This is because as the atom gets smaller, the valence electrons are closer and more attracted to the nucleus.
