What set pubic housing apart from what Roosevelt tried to do? How did they approach housing after the new deal era? They regulated and enforced standards. This was about improving existing conditions. There was a big difference between Roosevelt’s industrial housing act and the new deal. These standards made rent go up. Construction Maintenance Funds to municipal governments. Ran into problems with the public housing program in the 1950s. These problems were: High density because public housing gets de-funded because of the stimulated economy. Tripled in density because they needed to meet the federal regulated quota for cost. What were some of the critiques in the 1960s about public housing? Architectural design was critiqued. The structures that were being built were very unsafe. There were no commercial activities in the immediate area. Surrounded by open land that created a shortage of jobs. Levittown: Going in the 1940s/1950s. So significant for the time because it was mass produced. Homes were totally standardized similar to an assembly line. It was a totally new type of suburban development that was enabled by FHA insurance and GI bills and a totally new form of home construction. Creation of the interstate highway system was made official under Eisenhower after WWII. American Road Builders association was formed in 1943. First auto lobby that formed. This group forms to promote the idea of the interstate highway system. Eisenhower was inpired by the German Autobaun. Prime motivations for an interstate highway system in the 40s and 50s: Sale of Cars/Auto Industry, Cold War fear of a Nuclear attack so every can get out fast, Commerce, Road Conditions, and traffic. There were negative social and environmental impacts of this interstate highway system. In 1954, Eisenhower calls together a group to see how the US is going to finance this highway system . He asks Lucius Clay who was a GM board member and a General in WWII. Another board member was Steve Becktel. Becktel Corp was known for the Hoover dam and renowned for redeveloping the Kuwaiti oil fields after the Gulf War. 1956 The interstate highway system is passed. $25 B bond is passed with a non-divertible gas tax that was going to fund the highway system. When it is finished, there is 46,000 miles of roadway in 1991. Officially finished in 1991. Aspects of Sprawl : Cheap construction, Subdivisions and Shopping centers spread across the land. Privatized. Pockets of Density, No Core. De-centralization. Loss of rural space due to urban expansion. No design/unplanned Sprawl is a product of a certain type of growth where rural land is eaten up as the city expands. Suburbs
