Course Syllabus – Fall 2010 HORT 217 - Woody Landscape Plants Instructor: Dr. Matthew A. Jenks Room 314 HORT Phone: 765-494-1332 Email: jenksm@purdue.edu Office Hours: M,W 9:20am -10:20am Other times by appointment, email, or phone. COURSE OBJECTIVES : At the end of this course, you will be able to recognize and classify important woody landscape plants by their common and scientific names, describe key characteristics of each plant, and be able to apply this knowledge for proper plant selection and use in the landscape. 1. Lecture Periods Meeting : Mondays 8:30am-9:20am; meets in Room 117 HORT Objectives : Lectures will provide students with an overview of woody plant characteristics influencing plant selection and use in the managed landscape. Each week, lectures will present the esthetics, adaptability, maintenance, and other characteristics for a selected group of plants. Plants are grouped based on functional similarities generally associated with overall size and growth habit. The lectures will not present an exhaustive coverage of all plants in each plant group, but instead emphasize distinctive characteristics of representative members. Preparation for lecture: Students should prepare for lectures by reading the 1-page leture notes for each plant being covered that week. Lecture notes are posted in PDF format on Blackboard. Information will be presented in lecture that is not included in the lecture notes. For that reason, students will benefit greatly by bringing to class each of the 1-page notes for each plant being covered in lecture and using them for note taking. Some plants presented this semester do not have the 1-page lecture notes provided. For these, students would benefit from preparing their own notes to bring to the lecture.
