Anthropology 100 Lecture Outline Political Systems  1. The problem of social control - while not all societies have formal governments, all of them must find ways of constraining individual behavior, as well as of resolving disputes - these are often referred to as systems of social control 2. Social systems and social control - in most cases, social systems include elements that control the actions of individuals - the Nuer of the Sudan, for example, regulate disputes and behavior through their patrilineal kinship system - people are associated with the parts of lineage that are most closely related to them, a system known as segmentary opposition - segmentary opposition can be used to resolve disputes; when one person is accused of theft by another, for example, each turns to his lineage segment for support - such a system has some advantages over ours, in the speed and flexibility of resolving disputes; it also has disadvantages and dangers, in that it has
