Biological Molecules Organic molecules = biological molecules Contain carbon skeleton/backbone bonded to some hydrogen. Most are large and complex Can be synthesized and used by living organisms building blocks for cells Inorganic molecules all molecules without carbon Ex: water (H 2 O), salt (NaCl) carbon dioxide-> no hydrogen! simpliar molecules

Carbon in Organic Molecules most important element in living organism Only has 4 electrons in outer shell (needs 8) bond with up to 4 other atoms to become stable Forms single, double or triple bonds with other atoms Can lead to complex shapes of organic molecules Ex: branched chains, rings, sheets and helices Table 2-3
