Assignment 7 Nature of Soils (20 pts) 1. A dark soil layer or layers indicates: the soil may contain many humus particles, such as prairie soils. A red soil layer indicates: the soil contains traces of iron-containing oxides. A pale soil layer in boreal forest indicates: that the soil was formed when organic matter and colored minerals washed downward. The result is the light-colored mineral matter behind. 2.a. Soil A has make up of Loam soil texture. Soil B has a make up of a Sandy Loam texture. 2.b. Between soil A and Soil B, soil B will be able move water faster because its soil texture is more coarse-textured. The sandier soils have more small passages between the mineral grains and allow passage of water easier as opposed to the high percentage of clay found in soil A which would inhibit faster water flow. 2.c. Between soils A and B, soil A is the one that has a higher water storage capacity. This is because the clay content in soil A is greater which implies the particles have a larger
