09:31 1. "People in Arms":  When British arrived in North America they found the citizens  attacking them rather than a regular army; no regular standing army during revolutionary  war, instead British faced a "citizen army" 2. 3 Theaters of Operation (Civil War):  Eastern Theater, Western Theater, Trans- Mississippi 3. 9 Principles of war (3 for US):  Objective, Offensive, Maneuver 4.AEF and the Amalgamation issue:  Pershing refused to accept amalgamation,  integrating US troops with European forces. Pershing was ready to send troops in 1918.  Pershing delayed American operations for a year to conduct training 5. AEF and the Meuse-Argonne Campaign Results:  Supported national objectives:  independent army & seat at the peace talks at Versailles 6. America Enters WWI:  Wilson orders arming of US merchantmen, Germany sinks US  ships, 1917 Congress declares war on Germany 7. American Revolution in the South (1780-1781):  British brutality on colonials hurt  the "hearts and mind" strategy; Colonial guerilla units pinned down British units giving  continental army time to prepare (Where and what war?) 8. Article 1, Section 8:  Congress' responsibility is to: declare war, raise and support  armies, provide and maintain a navy, call forth the militia, organizing arming and  disciplining the militia

9. Article 2, Section 2:  President shall be Commander and Cheif 10. Battle of Antietam : Unions victory prompted Lincoln to issue the Emancipation  Proclamation. Changed the nature of war into a struggle to death ( which Battle?) 11. Battle of Chancellorsville:  Tactical victory but strategic loss; Union army survived  to fight on 12 .Battle of Long Island:  Washington is able to escape with army intact to Manhattan;  British fail to score decisive victory they were seeking 13. Battle of Saratoga:  Victory led to the French Alliance (1778) 14. Battle of Spotsylvania : Lee used earthworks for the first time (battle) 15. Battle of the Wilderness:  Union suffers 27K casualties. Army of Potomac moved  forward for the first time rather than retreating. Cured inferiority complex.
