1 Layla Fijany Chem 12A T/TH 5-10pm 12/5/2011 Experiment 7: IR of Unknown Purpose : To identify organic compounds using infrared spectroscopy Introduction: The ability to identify organic compounds is an important skill that is frequently used in the laboratory. Although there are several spectroscopic methods and many chemical and physical tests that can be used for identification, the goal of this experiment is to identify an unknown liquid using infrared spectroscopy. Hypothesis: Absorption at designated sites in the spectrum will provide clues as to what the unknown is. Set Up: Procedure Part A: Distillation 1. Set up a simple distillation apparatus -place unknown in a round bottom flask -begin to heat *Determine BP of unknown Infrared Spectrum 1. Obtain the sample after distillation and obtain the infrared spectrum of the unknown -absorption peaks of the following should be identified: C-H(sp3), C-H(sp2), C-H(aldehyde), O-H, C=O, C=C(aromatic), C-O, C-X, N-H
