UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, JAMAICA SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION GROUPS: BBA3/POM3/E/PBBA3 SUBJECT: Introduction to Costing COURSE-WORK NO. : Three (3) DATE: November 3, 2009 DUE DATE: At or BEFORE 9:00 am November 30, 2009 Please read the following carefully: (1) Deliverables shall include soft copy emailed to the lecturer and hard copy presented to the lecturer/tutor or his nominee on or before the due date. (2) The due date is by 9:00 on Monday November 30, 2009. (3) This assignment is worth 20% of the overall grade for the course. (4) Groups should not exceed four (4) and can be one (1). (5) The assessment of the assignment is based on the following criteria: (a) Accuracy and completeness of solutions 20% (b) Evidence of a logical approach adopted in arriving at solutions 20% (c) Demonstration (through an interview) of an understanding of concepts, principles and approaches required in arriving at the solutions 50% (d) Aesthetics (formatting and organization) of the solution 10% 100% (6) We will not entertain any request for an extension of the deadline. (7) Students are encouraged to communicate with their lecturers/tutors to brief them on their progress and/or to discuss problems that they have encountered. These interactions must be on a timely manner and must be initiated by the group. (8) Students are encouraged to make multiple back-ups as they work to safe-guard against man-made events and acts of God. . (9) Each member of the group should be prepared to answer questions posed by the lecturer /tutor pertaining to the assignment. (10)We will be watchful for, but do not expect any two assignments to be duplicates. In case this happens, however, the University’s policy relating to academic misconduct will apply. (11) The names and IDs of the members of each group should be communicated to the Lecturer by email by November 10, 2009. Groups can be formed between members of different tutorial groups. (12) Assignments handed in late ( for whatever reason(s) ) will be penalized as follows: >1 minute late 30% off > 24 hours late 60% off > 48 hours late 90% off > 72 hours late Project not accepted

Question 1 Sutra Construction Limited is a privately owned company that builds single and multiple housing units. Most projects undertaken by the company involve the construction of multiple units. The company has adopted a job order costing system for determining the cost of each unit. The costing system is fully computerized. Each project’s costs are divided into the following five categories: (1) General conditions, including construction site utilities, project insurance, permits and licenses, architect’s fees, field office salaries, and cleanup costs. (2) Direct costs, such as subcontractors, direct materials, and direct labour.
