Mitchell T. Heaton Mr. Szorc Honors Geometry 12 May 2009 Flatland Discussion Questions 1. I stared at the line in front of me that was the council. The hustle and bustle of others around me made progress slow going. Careful not to run into my fellow Flatlanders, I made my way inside the courthouse and into the council room. The room had an eerie feeling about it. It was neither warm nor cold. It was not welcoming but it was not foreboding. The room itself had a kind of nonchalant indifference about it. Its walls seemed to press in upon you shoving you forward as if urging you to spit out the truth. As the defendant entered I assumed a seat towards the back of the room. Once again I felt that I had something to hide. Just being in the courthouse made me feel dirty and unclean like a common criminal. The President began asking the defendant various questions that involved the Law. The morning’s “Flatland Flyer” had done a piece on the Law and how it maintains peace in Flatland. Everything the Square said seemed to contradict that. He spoke of a “Third Dimension” that expanded on the world of Flatland. He continuously referred back to a saying, a sort of catchphrase of his, “Upward, not Northward.” The
