Mitchell T. Heaton Father Basil Yender, OSB Freshman Theology Honors 9-21-08 Ancient Ur Thousands of years ago, the first civilization was established in the city of Ur in Mesopotamia. Ur existed in the prehistoric times and during the middle centuries of the third millennium it became a Sumerian city-state. The city flourished during the Early Dynastic Period about 3000-2400 B.C. Archaeologists give credit to this period for the “celebrated” tombs of the Royal Cemetery. After a period of decline, Ur flourished once again in the “Third Dynasty of Ur”. During this dynasty, Ur’s leader, Ur-Nammu, built a great ziggurat to honor Nanna, the Moon God. This great ziggurat is a hallmark of the city of Ur today. Throughout its lifespan, the civilization of Ur experienced times of greatness and times of inactivity. Eventually, the civilization of Ur faded out and was abandoned in the fourth century B.C.
