Sony Corporation, the company that changed the way the world listens to music with the introduction
of the Walkman personal stereo, is a large, well known and regarded, international Japanese corporation
headquartered in Japan. It is one of the leading manufacturers of electronics products for consumers and
professional markets in the world and employs over 168,200 people worldwide (Sony Corporation of
America, 2011). Sony Corporation is the electronics business unit and the parent company of the Sony
Group. Sony's principal business operations include Sony Corporation (Sony Electronics in the U.S.),
Sony Pictures Entertainment (motion pictures), Sony Computer Entertainment (games and Playstation),
Sony Music Entertainment (music), Sony Ericsson, and Sony Financial.
Sony’s products are varied and are distributed worldwide. Some of their more popular and well
known products include their PlayStation gaming systems and games, Sony Vaio computers, and the
Sony subsidiary Columbia Pictures which have released such films as The Da Vinci Code, The Pursuit
of Happiness and Casino Royale. Sony keeps up with a lucrative world presence by having a diverse
product line, investing in multimillion dollar marketing techniques, and making their products
accessible to their consumers. One way they do this is by way of their website.
While Sony has a different website in almost every language and country for the purpose of this
paper, I will be evaluating their American counterpart which is simply located at: http://www.sony.com.
At first glimpse Sony has done an excellent job of streamlining their website and making it user-
friendly for their average customer. Their top tabs are labeled easily for customers to find their way
towards Electronics, Playstation, Online Games, Movies & Music, and lastly Support. I was able to find
after a bit of searching Sony’s contact information which left much to be desired. It appears that they
like their customers to seek automated support and if necessary to reach out to the local Sony stores in
the area versus a main Sony hotline.
Something Sony has done very well with its brand and is evident when browsing their website is
their product diversity. They had products ranging from cameras, phones, games, TVs, movies, eBook
readers, and computers.
