PSYC 1101 – Sunni Newton Friday, 11/4/11 Chapter 11 - Human Development – Class 2 DO NOT READ 502 – END Piaget’s Stages of Development o Studied mistakes children make to understand the development of thinking o It’s not simply that infants and children know less than adults—they view the world differently o As children go through these stages, they form schemas o Assimilation You have a schema, get new information, and incorporate that new information into the schema. Just expanding the existing schema o Accommodation Encounter new information that does not fit into the schema. You must mold and change the schema so it will fit the new information. o Sensorimotor Stage (birth – 2 years) Information acquired only through senses Infants gradually learn that they can act on objects, rather than just reacting to them They put everything in their mouth! Object permanence Does the kid understand that an object moved out of sight still exists?
