PSYC 1101 – Sunni Newton 11/28/11 Chapter 14: Disorders of the Mind and Body – Lecture 1 Psychopathology: “a disorder of the mind” o Prevalent throughout history Attitudes and treatments have changed drastically o Very common: affect nearly 1 in 2 people at some point in their life High severity: quite rare, affecting approximately 7% of the U.S. population Is it a mental disorder? Three questions to consider: a. Does the behavior deviate from cultural norms? b. Is the behavior maladaptive? c. Is the behavior causing the individual personal distress? Organization of mental disorders o Categorized on the basis of co-occurring symptoms o Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) Involves classification on a multiaxial system (5 dimensions/axes) Patient is evaluated with respect to all five dimensions/axes First axis = clinical disorders Second axis = mental retardation and personality disorders
