PSYC 1101 – Sunni Newton – 12/5/11 Treatment of mental disorders: 2 main approaches o Psychological treatments Biological treatments Psychopharmacology (medication) Electrical stimulation of brain regions Surgical interventions Psychological treatments Various forms of psychotherapy all involve practitioner-client interactions Psychodynamic therapy Pioneered by Freud Goal: increasing client’s awareness of unconscious processing (e,g, needs, defenses, and motives) and how it impacts daily functioning (aka insight ) Free association, dream analysis o Modern approach is more conversational, less focused on childhood events Humanistic therapies Client-centered therapy o Greater self-understanding personal growth Goal: safe, comforting environment allows client to access his/her true feelings Reflective listening—helps client focus on subjective experience
