Reflective Essay: Diversity and Professional PracticeTeachers from experiences know that students learn differently and that various instructional approaches must be employed to reach them. The growing diversity within today's classrooms necessitates a more deliberate shift from a teacher-centered to a learner-centered education system. Teaching, therefore, must connect to children's development, background, interests, and experiences. As I reflected on this course, I have realized that living in a third world country has protected my students from many of the diversity issues encountered by most students in the first world. However, it has also illumined the need for preparation since the world has become a global village.Personal Beliefs Then and NowAll children can learn no matter who they are or from what background they come. It is the teacher's responsibility to seek to understand the child and move that child from where he is to where he is expected to be. Children should be catered for differently according to their abilities. Boys and girls in some measure should be instructed differently because, by nature, they are different. I, therefore, focussed on the diversities such as sex, age, and abilities. This course has made me aware of varying diversities that I have never encountered in the classroom that may have existed in my school, but never considered or brought to the fore because of the stigma attached. As I contemplate race, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression of students, I wonder about the many students I would have encountered who had questions that were never answered because of what the Tobago culture exhibits and were, therefore, unable to become the authentic version of
