10/25/10 CLAS 131 Notes 23 Myth and Public Space The Acropolis in Athens New Focus Focus for first half of course: the ways that the ancient Greeks used myth to think about the nature of the world (the gods), the relationship between humans and the world (gods an mortals), and the relationship of humans to each other (family and community) Focus for the second half of the course: the intersection of myth with other aspects of Greek and Roman culture - public space and communal identity - religion - philosophy - history - Vergil’s Aeneid Myth and Public Space: The Acropolis of Athens Be able to: - discuss the importance of myth in shaping communal identity - summarize some of the myths about early Athenian history - describe how the monuments of the Acropolis used both local and Panhellenic myth to shape communal identity among the Athenians Myth and Communal Identity OED : ‘A traditional story, typically involving supernatural beings or forces, which embodies and provides an explanation, aetiology, or justification for something such as the early history of a society , a religious belief or ritual, or a natural phenomenon.’ The story of the ‘First Thanksgiving’ functions as an American myth that: - explains who we are - justifies our presence here - endorses communal life and mutual help Local Myth and Panhellenic Myth Panhellenic ( pan , ‘all’, + hellenikos , ‘Greek’): myths told throughout Greek world, with
