Geography Lecture 18 16:35 3.24.11 Test – Maps of Latin America and Africa. Must know regions we talked about in class.  Ex. West Africa Geographies of Cocaine Production Comes from coca plant 75% of world’s cocaine comes from 3 countries: Bolivia, Peru, Colombia Hierarchies of illegal cartels run the trade Domesticated in the Andes centuries ago. Natives used to chew on coca leaves to get  high.  Easy to grow, can grow up to 4 crops per year. Natural immunities to pests and disease Indigenous peoples in the highland regions have turned it into a cash crop Thousands of peasants have abandoned other food crops in order to participate in  illegal production in remote mountain regions President of Bolivia is of Native descent and has basically decriminalized growing coca The indigenous groups are becoming very political  Attention to indigenous technical knowledge
