The Pacific Rim Defining the Asian region 1. Pacific Asia 2. Highly urbanized/industrialized 3. Trade moves primarily across Pacific waters 4. Tends not to be territories rich in natural resources 5. Relatively high-skilled, low-waged labor force Arose when U.S. multi-national corporations were looking for ways to lower costs.  Instead of changing technologies, they moved over seas to seek out low-waged labor  force.  Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs) *** Singapore At the tip of the Malaysian peninsula.  Became independent in 1963 and separated from Malay Federation two years later due  to ethnic rivalry arising from urban/rural split of population. Improved infrastructure for more efficient exporting Major stopping point for oil from Middle East to Japan, refineries Public housing subsidized labor force making their labor even cheaper Strong hand by government disciplined workforce Malays describes people from Malaysia as well as Indonesia and the Philippines, etc.  Westerners and Chinese are also prevalent.  Landscape: Mix of old colonial buildings and brand new skyscrapers. Very clean. No  gum chewing and spitting, tax beer and cigarettes heavily. Chinese and English signs.  Street food is popular; government organized street fenders into food courts.
