Kevin Creager EE 485 Chapter 5 Questions 1. What is meant by quantal release of neurotransmitter? The elementary unit of a neurotransmitter release is the content of a synaptic vesicle. Each vesicle contains several thousand transmitter molecules. The total amount of transmitters released at a synapse is a multiple of this number. 2. You apply Ach and activate nicotinic receptors on a muscle cell. Which way will current flow through the receptor channels when Vm=-60mV? When Vm=0mV? When Vm=60mV? Why? When Vm=-60mV net current flow through Ach-gated ion channels is inward toward the equilibrium potential of sodium. This would cause depolarization. When Vm=0 is the reversal potential and no current flows. This means that the critical value at which the direction of current flow reverses. When Vm=60mV, the net current flow through the Ach- gated ion channel is outward, toward the equilibrium potential of potassium. This causes the membrane potential to become less positive. 4.
