DQ 2: What are the major assumptions of psychoanalysis as formulated by Sigmund Freud? Discussion question responses should reflect critical thought and analysis. Whenever possible, please try to relate the course content to real-world applications from your work experience. Responses should be at least 250 - 300 words and will be scored as part of the participation points. They need to include two references [the text and one other reference (peer reviewed journal) – cited and referenced in APA format]. At least 60% of the DQ will be your words. According to Beystehner (n.d.) "as a therapy, psychoanalysis is based on the concept that individuals are unaware of many factors that cause their behavior and emotions" (para. 1). Sigmund Freud found a technique, which became the centerpiece of his practice. This technique was known as free association. Free association is when an individual is put into a relaxing position and inspired to say whatever comes to their mind. Sometimes a person would be resistant to this form of treatment.
