Chemistry 231-Section 001 T.A. David A. Jones Email: david.jones@uky.edu Office Hours: Tuesdays 2-4 Purpose : A few sentences about the purpose of the experiment. In the purpose you want to include WHY you are doing this experiment, HOW you will do it, and HOW you will analyze it. This is a short paragraph that includes all the basics of the experiments and what we will use to analyze our products. Theory : The theory section is where you explain the principles and details behind the experiment. This includes the mechanisms, and the types of reactions used (Sn2, Elimination, Diels- Alder etc.). The theory section can be short sometimes, but it can also be long—it totally depends on the experiment. So for a one-step Sn2 reaction, the theory may be a very short description of how Sn2 reactions work along with a DRAWING of the mechanism. DO NOT CUT AND PASTE mechanisms from powerpoint or anywhere else. You must draw the mechanisms yourself. For a multistep synthesis, you will need to discuss each part of the overall synthesis by breaking it down into the piece-by-piece reactions that we
