School of Information Technology Department of Computer Science COS326 – Database Systems Tutorial 1 Practical Date: 5 August 2011(Fri) Task 1: For this tutorial we will be working with PostgreSQL. It is already installed on the computers in the Informationium and the account password is data . (Remember to add the password to the PostgreSQL user account in the Control Panel and to start the server.) Installing PostgreSQL and PostGIS at home: All the installers for these programs are on the CS ftp ( ftp://ftp.cs.up.ac.za ) under Courses/COS326. Download the following files onto your C:\ drive: postgresql-8.4.2-1-windows.exe postgis-pg84-setup-1.5.0-1.exe Install PostgreSQL first and followed by the PostGIS installation. When asked to create a spatial database template, answer Yes. Task 2: Open the pgAdmin console in the Startup menu. The image below is the pgAdmin console, the following functions is highlighted: 1. Query Window, here you can write your SQL queries and execute them. There is an output window where you can observe the results.
