11/2/11 1 COMD 2050 Chapter 17: Language History and Change Language history } Sir William Jones } pioneer in the study of language } studied ancient Indian law written in a language called Sanskrit } noticed similarities between the verb forms and grammar of Sanskrit, Greek and Latin History } Philology: the study of the history of languages. } The name of the mother language = Proto-Indo-European } Proto : original or first form } Indo-European : the source of modern languages in the Indian sub-continent and in Europe.

11/2/11 2 Language tree } All of these languages belong to one family – the Proto- Indo-European. } There are about 30 similar language families and a grand total of about 7000 languages being spoken today. Language tree } English is in the Germanic family of languages along with German, Dutch, Swedish, etc… } English and other Germanic languages are fairly closely related to the Celtic languages. Language tree } Romance languages – Yule calls this family Italic. Includes all descendants of Latin: French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian.

3 Language tree } Ancient Greek has only one surviving descendant, Modern Greek, but the Balto-Slavic languages like Russian, Polish, and Czech are somewhat related to Greek. } Indo-Iranian branch includes Hindi (descendant of Sanskrit) and Persian. Languages } There are more native speakers of Chinese than any other language – about 1 billion, although there are different dialects – Mandarin and Cantonese. } English is more widely used in different parts of the world than any other language and has about 350 million native speakers. Languages } 300 million native speakers of Spanish.
