Introduction: In this experiment we measured the angle of light from a spectrum of hydrogen passing through a diffraction grating. We found that red light has an energy level of 2.9887 ± 0.0253, green light has an energy state of 4.0135 ± 0.0362, and blue has an energy level of 5.0387 ± 0.0532 at the first order. These values came very close to the expected values. Due to visibility problems, purple light was not observed. Procedure: First we set up the spectrometer by ensuring the slit was half open and then refocused the telescope until clear images of the slits with crosshairs in the middle were seen. Next, we calibrated the Vernier scale to the zero position so it was aligned with 360 degrees. Afterwards, we put in the apparatus. We obtained the lattice constant by using a helium discharge lamp. To do so, we aligned our telescope with the lamp until we saw colored lines, and then we placed black cardboard over the front of the collimator tube and covered it with a black cloth. We positioned the telescope till we saw a yellow spectrum line with the cross section. We repeated this for the other side. Finally, we used the relationship, d = λ*m/sin(θ), to derive the grating lattice constant d using the average of the two angles. After we calculated the grating constant, we observed the hydrogen spectra. First we turned on the lamp and aligned it with the cross section in our spectrometer.
