PHYS 3220 Week 9 Tutorial - Quantum Operator Methods Goals this week : 1. Developing intuition about measurement in a finite dimensional systems. (LG Math/physics connection, interpretation, building on earlier work/coherence of the class) 2. Practice with operator methods and interpreting brak-ket notation (LG Math/physics connection, interpretation, building on earlier work/coherence of the class) 3. Tutorial Summary : This Tutorial walks students through a series of questions about measurements on a basic 2-dimensional system, which is designed to be vaguely analogous to spin 1/2, but not quite the same. Note that we have not yet gotten to spin 1/2 in the course. All they need here is basic understanding of the postulates of QM and the interpretation of various operator methods. We guide them through questions of orthonormality, hermiticity, simultaneous observables, expansion in a basis and interpretation of the coefficients, measurement and collapse, and time dependence, all the basic ideas of QM. Reflection after administering the tutorial This was a very popular Tutorial! Specific comments and difficulties observed: Page I Students got the setup quickly. Some discussion about whether the states on page 1 should be “normal” or “orthogonal”, but they quickly settled this on their own. Page 2: “Is there any ambiguity” is itself ambiguous – this was intentional. My answer is “the state is not ambiguous, nor is the outcome of a W measurement, but the outcome of an H measurement is ambiguous. So the state is well defined, but certain measurements
