20 - unchecked November 5, 2008 CH 13 Dr. Warran Smith Does Abelard’s theory of consent take into the question of passion?  This became a subject for  reflection – at what point as he drove he his fist into a stack of books. He teaches about the passions because they are real.  And one doesn’t need to break one’s  hand to realize that the acting before thinking can cause suffering and pain. Moral discourse -  Use reason. We’re approaching the 11 th  hour, an dif we’re not already feeling stressed, soon we will feel  stressed. Stay on your guard!  This is the time to be on your guard.  When you are stressed and start  worrying… that’s why you may be tempted to take shortcuts academically. There is a difference between good collaboration and inappropriate collaboration.   We’re looking  for our own voice.  Not simply lifting the voice of another and presenting it as your own voice. It’s only in the moment of heat that the truth of our character comes through. Today:  The subject of Bonaventure and the Franciscans.  The 12 th  and 13 th  centuries – the  movement of the Friars – the 2 greatest reform movements are the Franciscans and the  Dominicans.   Both with respect to the Dominicans and to the Franciscans, two different forms of reform.  Dominci:  reform the church through good preaching.  Well-educated and good teaching will root  out heresy and bring people back. The other is the Franciscans, Francis of Assis.  Reform the church by calling the wealthy Roman  Catholic church to remember the poverty of Christ – a sharing of the suffering of humanity and a  sharing of the joy of simple things. Medieval Dr. Dolittle:  brokers peace between wolf and community and they live happily ever  after. Page 1 of 6 11/5/08

Thomas Aquinas’s contemporary:  Bonaventure.  Tries to express theologically what Francis’ life  and ministry were really about.  The esthetic theology that is the rational for Franciscans the way  Gregory of Nyssa provided the theological basis for Macrina’s monastery.   Bonaventure is Aquinas’ equal, but different style.  A Poetic style.  Platonic.  Not a philosopher  but a poet.  Employed metaphors not a serial logical presentation.  So, his life of Francis is a  hagiography, a saint’s life.  So that Francis becomes an embodiment of the prophets and  apostles, using the language of scripture.  Part of the key to reading Bonaventure is to read the  way you would read a poem, and image the way you would translate the Isaiah or whoever  Start with the life of St. Francis.  Then the itinerainium.  Tries to explain and give a model to train
